Palace: Raids vs Parojinog clan part of intensified drug war

Timoteo Pacleb later told DZMM that several rifles, an unspecified amount of suspected shabu and bundles of cash were confiscated from the mayor's house.

"The serving PNP personnel were met with volley of fire from their security prompting PNP personnel to retaliate", Pacleb said in a media statement.

Among those killed were the mayor, his wife Susan and Ozamiz board member Octavio Parojinog.

Espino added that the police in the region will not have second thoughts in arresting and going against government officials who are into the illegal drugs trade, especially that "we have the full support of President Rodrigo Duterte".

Duterte has promised an unrelenting war on drugs, defying critics who were "trivializing" his campaign with human rights concerns and unjustly blaming the authorities for the bloodshed.

He becomes the third mayor to be killed under Duterte's bloody crackdown on drugs, which has left more than 3,000 dead since June 2016 and drawn wide criticism by human rights groups.

Critics say Duterte has turned a blind eye to thousands of deaths during police operations that bear all the hallmarks of executions. More than 7,000 deaths have been reported from July 1, 2016, after Duterte took office, to January 21, according to police.

Ocang also disputed the claim of the police that the cops were greeted with gunfire when they were about to enter the houses of Mayor Parojinog and his daughter Nova.

He was killed along with his wife, his brother and nine others in a dawn raid, police said.

Parojinog's daughter, Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog, was arrested and will face drug charges.

De Guzman said they were armed with six search warrants for firearms, corresponding to the six places that were raided.

Espenido said that Parojinog's family is the main trafficker of drugs in Ozamiz and that drugs that reached the city came from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa city, Metro Manila.

All three mayors were among more than 160 officials Duterte named publicly as being linked to illegal drugs in August previous year as part of a shame campaign.

In November, Rolando R. Espinosa, Sr., mayor of Albuera town, was killed during a night-time raid in a provincial jail.

"Despite worldwide and local pressures the fight will not stop until those who deal in it [drugs] understand that they have to stop because the alternatives are either jail or hell, " he said.

He has vowed not to stop until the last drug trafficker in the country has been eliminated.

"The administration vowed to intensify the drug campaign", presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said in connection with Sunday's raids in Ozamiz.

Duterte said he would be "happy to slaughter" three million drug addicts, and likened his campaign to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's efforts to exterminate Jews in Europe.

She said Parojinog did not spare those he suspected to be involved in illegal drugs, including his kin.
