Kenyan Elections Jarred By Torture Murder Of Election Official

Details about the lady who was found dead alongside IEBC ICT Manager Chris Msando have been revealed.

According to reports, before his death, Musando, one of the few persons with knowledge on the location of IEBC servers, had reported to the police about death threats on him by unknown persons.

The August 8 poll, which pits the incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta, 55, against veteran challenger Raila Odinga, 72, has turned out to be unexpectedly close.

"The police had taken the fingerprints from the body since it was still fresh when it was identified and since it was a weekend they were to be matched on Monday", Owino noted.

The Kenya Integrated Electoral Management System (KIEMS) will be used to identify voters and transmit results. Msando's death has raised fresh fears over Kenya's ability to deliver credible elections. The political protests and the ethnic violence that followed killed more than 1,200 people and forced another 600,000 to flee. "I demand from the government that they provide security for all employees of IEBC, for us to give Kenyans a free and fair election", Chebukati said.

"All presidential candidates and their running mates also need to have security to avert any excuses of postponing the elections", President Kenyatta said during a Jubilee campaign rally.

Kenya's police chief Joseph Boinnet has said a special team from the Directorate of Criminal investigations has been set up to investigate Msando's murder. The toxic politics that led to the murders of political luminaries such as Tom Mboya, JM Kariuki, Pio Gama Pinto and Robert Ouko, as well as election violence in 1988, 1992, 1997, 2007 and 2013, is still with us.

This news also comes at a time when the government has denied allegations by opposition parties that it is planning to deploy the military to swing the election to its favour.

"Justice for Msando means Kenyans can only honour him by participating in the August 8 polls in large numbers to express their democratic right that he worked tirelessly to try and secure", IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati said.

Mr. Msando was scheduled to oversee the public testing of the voting system on Monday.
