Usain Bolt prepares for his final hurrah at World Athletics Championships

"I have the utmost respect for Usain", said Gatlin.

Bolt is widely considered the greatest sprinter in history.

De Grasse was named to Team Canada to compete in the 100m, 200m, and 4 x 100m relay.

At a pre-championship media conference in London this week, Bolt was asked who he believes could fill his shoes when he retires and he said: "I'm not going down that road. I am sad to miss the chance but I am young and, with treatment and rehabilitation, I will be back better than ever in the near future".

At the same stage previous year - in the build-up to the Rio Olympics - he had run 9.88. After pulling away - much later than expected- Bolt stared down De Grasse and good-naturedly shook his finger at the youngster for pushing him so hard. Bolt hasn't forgotten that race. "I enjoy the shorter distances", he said. At 6-foot-5, Bolt is uncommonly tall for a sprinter. De Grasse had been practising block starts on Monday at a local track and was set to finish his workout with a pair of light 60-metre runs.

De Grasse's injury will also be a blow to the Canadian team's hopes at the world championships. He said De Grasse was determined.

On his return to the track there was a lot of anger stored up - no longer the sense of fun that as a child had seen him dress up as Batman and jump on his parents' bed with them sound asleep - but he addressed the issue just as he had his Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). "I ended up beating my friend and was totally shocked". On the lookout for new talent for his speed academy, he did a double-take at De Grasse's time - 10.9 seconds with no form at all. "It's a semifinal.' But I think he wanted to push me".

De Grasse trained with Sharpe and hit his stride after only a couple lessons.

After more than two years cruelled by injury and with world record holder Kendra Harrison also in the field, Pearson has declared that a podium finish would rival any of her previous achievements on the track. "They are preparing to take on the world, and the focus should be on them".

"Sometimes when you rush it it only makes things worse".

The Championships begin on Friday, five years to the day since Great Britain won three Olympic gold medals in less than an hour on "Super Saturday" at the same venue.

This was thought to be in response to De Grasse suggesting Bolt might be slowing down in his final season.

Van Niekerk clocked 19.84 seconds in Kingston, Jamaica, in June while Makwala recorded 19.77 seconds in Madrid a month later, the two fastest times in the world this year. But I don't blame him at all.

"He's basically just shrugging his shoulders and saying, 'Well it happens, I can't do anything about it now". "I don't have his number or anything".

"It is the 400m that put him on the stage and which has made him strong mentally, but Wayde doesn't like it", she said.

"But he isn't fooling himself".

"I'm feeling good, I'm feeling better after every race. Can I get a picture?'" he said. We're going to go in the right direction and I'm happy about that situation.
