Voluntary postal vote to cost $122 million

A previous plebiscite Bill was rejected last November by the Senate, where Labor, the Greens and some other minor party MPs prefer an immediate free vote.

Australia plans on holding a non-compulsory postal vote if they can not find a way of winning political support for a national ballot for a vote on legalizing same-sex marriage.

Liberal members attending a special meeting in Canberra on Monday stood by the policy taken to the 2016 election for a national vote on changing marriage laws.

"If that were to fail, the government believes that we have a legal and constitutional way forward that gives the Australian people a say on whether or not the definition of marriage should be changed". These costs included damaging the parties by providing fuel to an already tense debate among liberals and conservatives, and costing the equivalent of $135 million United States dollars to hold a vote, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"This is not just about loving couples, if that was all that it was about, well, probably none of us would have too much concern", he said.

If the plebiscite bill fails to pass parliament, a postal vote will be conducted with a final date to submit ballot papers set for early November.

A plebiscite bill was introduced by the government previous year, but defeated in the Senate by 33 votes to 29.

A politician has explained how the heroism of a gay man who died in a terror attack inspired him to support equal marriage.

Turnbull also fended off criticism regarding the plebiscite method which is expected to cost more than 120 million Australian dollars (95 million US dollars) to run.

Both options have been widely-condemned by same-sex marriage advocates, who say a vote is unnecessary and expensive, while a polarizing campaign would be traumatic for Australia's LGBT community.

Polls show the majority of Australians support same-sex marriage.

The Federal Government has decided on a non-binding postal ballot if the Senate refuses to approve a compulsory plebiscite.

"[It] now puts pressure on the "small-l Liberal seven" to bring on a private members bill", Goldner told the Blade.

Victorian MP Jason Wood also prefers a parliamentary vote, but is willing to back a postal plebiscite. "Strong leaders carry out their promises, weak leaders break them", Turnbull told reporters.

If the Senate again blocks the plebiscite, the government intends to hold a voluntary postal plebiscite by November 15.

"For many years, though, I have also supported a conscience vote by members". But he still has a strong lead over Mr Shorten as preferred prime minister, with 46 per cent supporting him and 31 per cent backing the opposition leader, with the remainder uncommitted.

He concluded: 'Vote in Parliament and say "yes" to gay marriage and let's live happily ever after'.

Anna Brown, an LGBT activist and representative of the Equality Campaign, vowed to fight a postal plebiscite in court if Parliament continued to refuse to vote on same-sex marriage.
