Facebook Begins Rolling Out its Television Content

That's exactly the objective of Watch, which is created to make it quicker and easier to access the video content you want to see.

You can keep track of your favorite shows through a tab called Watchlist which would display new episodes as soon as they arrive.

Inside the Watch tab, videos will also be grouped according to popularity or those that are "most talked about", or even what the user's community is watching, e.g.

Facebook says the initial roll-out will be to a limited group of users in the USA with plans for wider distribution to follow.

Facebook Watch will not only give its users the ability to watch and follow shows on the platform itself but will also present the creators with an opportunity to monetize their content and gain a wider audience. Facebook's approach bears more resemblance to YouTube than Netflix Inc. or Amazon given its focus on short-form videos created to be shared online.

Facebook is launching a new video service which will see the social network giant pitted against YouTube and Amazon.

As it slowly transforms from a social network into a media company, Facebook Watch is the company's latest step into the latter.

Whether it's live or recorded, all of the video content in this new section will be referred to as a Show. They're likely to be concerned about Facebook's sheer monster-sized scale: it has two billion monthly active users.

The video tab has been available on Facebook for quite a time, but it displayed clips by amateurs or short videos by news agencies. There will also be a section that showcases popular videos, as well as trends like "What Made People Laugh" - which will list videos that got the most "Haha" reaction in a given time frame.

"We believe it's possible to rethink a lot of experiences through the lens of building community - including watching video", said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook is already broadcasting some Major League Baseball games and that would continue, the company said.

The company noted that Watch is a platform for all creators and publishers to find an audience, build a community of passionate fans, and earn money for their work.

Mike Rowe of "Dirty Jobs" fame will host a show that highlights "people doing something extraordinary for their communities".
