17 countries affected by toxic egg scandal

Fifteen EU countries as well as Hong Kong and Switzerland have received eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil, the European Commission says.

The European Commission plans to hold a meeting about the contamination on September 26. Apart from those two countries, there are many more in the continent that have food safety scares.

Dutch authorities said the raids also focused on a Belgian supplier of fipronil, named in the media as Poultry-Vision, and another unidentified Dutch company that allegedly colluded with it. It can harm people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands.

The origin of the case, the use of fipronil by companies of disinfection involved in the agricultural holdings in the netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

What is being done about it?

In France, Agriculture Minister Stephane Travert said that tests on imported eggs contaminated with pesticide show no risk to public health.

Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda have been withdrawing 11 items - including sandwiches and salads - though some may have already been consumed.

The German supermarket giant Aldi was the first major supermarket to pull all its eggs from shelves in July.

A KFDA official said, "No eggs from the Netherlands have been imported, and the expiry dates of European chicken imports have passed, so we only issued a temporary ban on the distribution and sales of processed egg products from Europe".

What will the European Union meeting do?

"Blaming and shaming will bring us nowhere and I want to stop this", European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis said.

"This is not, let's be clear, a crisis meeting", Andreeva said.

"Information needs to be shared between (EU) member states without delay".

What's happening with the criminal investigation?

Two directors of the company at the centre of the scandal were arrested on Thursday by Dutch authorities.

More than 100 poultry farms were closed during the investigation and at least 26 suspects were identified.

Why have countries been arguing?

Reports of possibly tainted eggs linked to the pesticide scandal in the Netherlands and Belgium are cropping up in several countries.

He also called for countries in Europe to work together to learn from the problem amid raised tensions between Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany over who was at fault. "The minister told lawmakers that Dutch authorities had been aware of the contamination since last November and failed to alert others".

The Netherlands denied the charge.
