What do you think about BC's plan for $15 minimum wage?

"Restaurants Canada supports reasonable minimum wage increases that ensure our employees keep up with the cost of living, are announced well in advance to give businesses time to adjust, and do not trigger large menu price increases or a reduction in entry-level employment", said von Schellwitz.

Members of the public should expect to see the commission's first report in December this year, or January 2018, some 90 days after it has its first meeting, Bains said.

The provincial government is making its first move toward a $15-an-hour minimum wage for British Columbia by announcing a 50-cent increase for September and renewing its commitment to a fair wages commission.

The composition will focus on gradually achieving a $15 an hour minimum wage by 2021.

Liberal labour critic John Martin criticized Horgan for releasing no information on what Martin called Horgan's "so-called fair wages commission" as well as Horgan not outlining a clear path for consultation with small business owners.

"Raising the minimum wage is only one way the new government will make life more affordable for British Columbians, but it's an important start", said Minister of Labour Harry Bains.

"British Columbians can not afford to roll the dice - we should have the facts, first".

The minister said by increasing minimum wages incrementally and predictably, according to a four year plan, this would help businesses plan for the changes.

Oakes says this increase, for mom and pop type shops, could be the difference in hiring an extra person...

However, he said this wage has been a long time coming, adding that "we are far behind the other provinces".

"Just because they're doing it doesn't mean it's going to be done well", Litwin said, adding that studies out of the USA found increasing wages too quickly results in businesses reducing hours or cutting staff.

"Today's increase and our commitment to the $15 minimum wage will benefit nearly 100,000 British Columbians who have been getting by on one of the lowest minimum wages in the country", said Horgan, adding that 62% of minimum-wage earners are women.
