Pomeranz hurt, exits the game with back woes

After throwing a few warmup pitches, Pomeranz was removed from the game. Aroldis Chapman, Addison Reed, and Craig Kimbrel were all needed to finally stop the Red Sox rally. The Yankees were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 14 on base.

The most recent occurred Friday night when, after a stirring four-run rally in the top of the seventh gave the Yankees a three-run lead, the bullpen coughed it up in the bottom half. There is no doubt, though, that a young team getting its hopes up, coming that close to a division title and not obtaining it in a year where little was expected could have lingering negative affects on the mindset of the team even if it finds its way into the postseason.

The loss dropped the Yankees (65-56) five games behind the Red Sox (70-51).

"Obviously we're going out and trying to control what we can", Mitch Moreland said.

"We're pretty good at it this year, it seems like", Moreland said of Boston's flair for the dramatic. After that incident, New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia reported having endured similar treatment in Boston.

The Herald pointed out that the Red Sox passed on opportunities to sign two of baseball's African-American pioneers - Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays - before Pumpsie Green joined the team in 1959. Are the Red Sox putting the AL East out of reach?

"To get that win and kind of separate ourselves a little bit more and start the series off on the right note, yeah, it's a big one", Moreland said. "Any time you can gain ground on somebody that's right there behind you, it's always nice". They are losing extra games because of a lack of general depth, and that is what leaves the Red Sox in front.

If you take away Sale's implosion against the Indians where he gave of seven runs in five innings (the Red Sox still won that game mind you), Sale has given up just one earned run in his last five starts, covering 35.2 innings of work.

The Boston Red Sox will look to stay hot after Friday's win pushed their winning streak to three games while winning 13 of their last 15 games overall.

"Unfortunately, we sent a lot of guys to the mound, [had] a lot of balls in play", Boston manager John Farrell said. "I don't have a return date at all", Farrell said.
