Shakib, Tamim steady Bangladesh after Cummins onslaught

Just the 13th tweaker of any iteration to scale this peak after claiming 3-79 on day one of the first Test in Dhaka, and only the second from Australia after Shane Warne, who peddled leg spin, which has historically proved a more potent weapon for spinners on hard, true Australian pitches.

A trio of early breakthroughs for Pat Cummins (3-63) left Bangladesh reeling, but Tamim Iqbal (71) and Shakib Al Hasan (84) rescued the hosts with a fourth-wicket stand of 155.

It also elevates him to eighth (replacing another ex-leggie, Richie Benaud) on Australia's honour board of Test wicket-takers, with the potential to snatch seventh-place from Jason Gillespie (259 wickets) by the time this tour of Bangladesh is done. This first Test will be the first between the countries since Ricky Ponting's side toured Bangladesh in 2006, winning the two-match series 2-0. "I'm pretty proud of those guys and to be able to take 10 wickets on day one after losing the toss and bowling first, as a bowling unit I'm very proud of them".

The Aussies got off to a disastrous start with the bat in the final session with David Warner (8) trapped in front by off-spinner Mehedi Hasan in the sixth over.

The batsmen in the crease-Matt Renshaw and visiting skipper Steven Smith-are left to ponder ways to counter the Bangladesh spin attack when they resume batting on the second day, with the pitch increasingly favouring the spinners.

Steve Smith's team has not played a Test in Bangladesh in more than a decade and its preparations were hampered when its only practice game was washed out because of flooding in Fatullah. We need to bat well, bat in partnerships and bat deep.

While much of the build up from an Australian perspective had surrounded Agar's return to the Test side, it was Cummins - another to make a stunning Test debut as a teenager - who stole the show early. Tottering at 10/3, the hosts were in a real scare of getting embarrassed, but their two experienced batsmen bailed them out.

He averages 40 with the bat, 33 with the ball, and is No.1 on the ICC's rankings for Test allrounders, yet because he doesn't play for one of the so-called "big teams" often, Shakib Al Hasan still probably doesn't get the worldwide recognition he deserves.

Nasir Hossain was recalled for his first Test appearance for two years, having last played against South Africa in 2015.

In his next over he removed Imrul Kayes and Sabbir Rahman for nought off successive deliveries to reduce Bangladesh to 10 for 3.

"I think it's in the balance".

All those episodes have, in turn, served as lessons for Ashton Agar, playing his third Test match and first alongside Lyon, after briefly deposing him in 2013 as a mussy-haired teenager. "They were fearless in their batting and played some incredible shots".
