Sony announces the Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact, and XA1 Plus at IFA

Both phones will run Android 8 Oreo out the box, but we don't have prices just yet. However, it's the mini version of this device - the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact - that really has us excited. Trying to lure consumers into buying its new handsets, Sony released promo videos for each of them. It also features IP65/68 ratings for dust and water resistance. We've never been huge fans of Sony's custom UI, finding it overbearing compared with the vanilla Android experience, but some of the added apps are a bonus.

Xperia XZ1 is powered by the cutting-edge Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform with X16 LTE, created to provide blazing fast Gigabit LTE downloads speeds (up to 1Gbps) and performance to enjoy a modern lifestyle whilst working or having fun.

While Samsung remains silent, companies like HTC, OnePlus, and Motorola have confirmed Android 8.0 Oreo updates. Inside is a capacious 3,430mAh battery that should easily keep this going for a full day of use. Bringing a vibrant choice of three colors to express your individual style - Gold, Blue, Pink and Black - Xperia XA1 Plus features a rounded, sleek design with narrow borders and intuitive fingerprint sensor on the power button to give you personalized security. Sony mentions that it plans to integrate this with games so that you'll be able to scan your head and use it as an avatar.

Although both models share the same rear-facing cameras, it's a different story for the front-facing shooters.

Xperia XA1 Plus will be available in stores from the end of October and it will be priced SR1,099.

Staying true to its name, the Xperia XZ1 Compact arrives with a 4.6-inch IPS LCD display with the resolution of 720×1280 pixels. In addition to predictive capture, the camera is capable of taking super slow motion videos at 960 fps, and has "Steady shot" with Intelligent Active Mode 5-axis stabilization to help with taking videos. Here's our Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact hands-on review.

Inside located a powerful Snapdragon processor 835 and 4 GB of RAM. The pair is protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 technology, ensuring that the screens do not catch scratches or cracks easily.

What are your thoughts about the next generation of Sony XZ1, XZ1 Compact and the mid-ranger - XA1 Plus devices? This basically allows the XZ1 to capture objects in 3D in less than 60 seconds which is achieved by the user walking around the said object (s) and keeping the camera focused on them. Without having used the tech firsthand, it's hard to say how well it works, but I'm doubtful that it's the mass-market feature Sony needs to shift more smartphones.

There's a 19MP camera on the back of the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, just like on other recent Sony flagships. There is also Qnovo Adaptive Charging that controls the charge current to prevent the battery from damage. The front camera is a super wide angle 18MP Exmor sensor with f/2.4 aperture and with a 120 degree field-of-view.
