Surrey, Middlesex match suspended after crossbow bolt lands on pitch

It said: "Play suspended at Kia Oval after a "projectile" was sacked into the ground from outside".

A Met Police spokesperson said: "Police were made aware at 4.35pm on Thursday, 31 August of reports that an arrow or crossbow bolt had been loosed into the Oval Cricket ground".

A metal arrow fired during the match dropped in the middle of the pitch, right near where the umpires and few other players were standing.

A "metal tipped" arrow was sacked onto the field of play during a professional English cricket game in London, British police said Thursday.

A statement from Surrey Cricket Club said there were no injuries. "Players have left the field after a crossbow bolt landed on the square", Middlesex tweeted.

Batty, who was fielding some 25 yards from where the bolt landed, said: "It was a pretty tasty arrow with a proper metal end".

Armed police were called and the ground was eventually evacuated, with the match being marked as a draw.

"The ground is in the process of a controlled evacuation".

"The umpires took it out of the ground and got the players off as quickly as possible".

Police said they were keeping an "open mind" as to motive.

More than 1,000 fans were advised to take cover and evacuated from the central London cricket ground after the projectile fell to the ground.

A picture on Middlesex's Twitter feed showed one of the match officials holding the arrow.
