Top Court To Hear Plea Challenging Move To Deport Rohingyas

Advocates for the Rohingya, an oppressed Muslim minority in overwhelmingly Buddhist Myanmar, say hundreds of Rohingya civilians have been killed by security forces.

Both said in the petitions that their lives would be in danger if they were sent back to Myanmar, where clashes broke out last Friday after Rohingya insurgents wielding sticks, knives and crude bombs attacked police posts and an army base.

Since then thousands of Rohingyas - not recognised by the Myanmar government - crossed the border to flee violence.

They allege massacres of Rohingya in remote villages led by Myanmar security forces and ethnic Rakhine Buddhist mobs.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, later issued a statement chastising Myanmar's security forces. "When huge waves tilted the boat, we panicked", Shah Karim said.

Myanmar's military said Friday that nearly 400 people died in recent violence in the western state of Rakhine triggered by attacks on security forces by insurgents from the Rohingya ethnic minority.

Over 400,000 Rohingya refugees are already living in overcrowded, squalid camps and makeshift settlements in Bangladesh's southern district of Cox's Bazar.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday asked the USA to put pressure on Myanmar to stem the flow.

New recruits are being trained and armed in the hillsides across the border in Myanmar's Rakhine State, Omar told AFP, where a week of bloody conflict has left at least 110 confirmed dead and driven almost 20,000 civilians into Bangladesh.

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a plea filed by noted lawyer, Prashant Bhushan, challenging the decision to deport illegal Rohingya Muslim immigrants back to Myanmar.

The violence left at least 110 people dead, including 11 state officials.

The government says it is the insurgents who have been burning homes and killing members of the Buddhist ethnic Rakhine community.

The Rohingyas, who came to India after violence in the Western Rakhine State of Myanmar, have settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

The United States on Thursday urged the military to protect civilians, while Yanghee Lee, the UN s special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, expressed fears that "grave violations" could take place.

Lt. Col. S.M. Ariful Islam, a Bangladeshi border guard commander, said at least three boats carrying an unknown number of Rohingya Muslims sank in the Naf River in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday.

Around 38,000 Rohingya have crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar since Friday, U.N. sources said.

"We did not push them back, rather we told them. you should go back to your territory", added Khan, who said there was a "humanitarian crisis" developing along the border.

Main Uddin, a government official in Cox's Bazar, said the survivors reported that about 86 Hindus had been killed by armed groups in three villages since August 25.
