Huawei unveils new AI-equipped phone at IFA

According to Yu, the cost of the development of AI for the Kirin 970 has cost the company billions of Chinese yuan over the past five years, resulting in breakthrough technology in the field. It will be the firm's first "mobile AI computing platform" featuring a "dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU)" that is capable of up to 25 times the performance with 50 times greater efficiency compared to the Cortex-A73 CPU.

The new chipset is expected to be featured in Huawei's Mate 10 flagship smartphone. The company also says that a chipset like the Kirin 970 will become more cognitive of user needs, providing truly personalized and readily accessible services.

The Kirin 970 chip is powered by an octa-core CPU and the latest generation 12-core GPU.

The new processor will, therefore, be similar to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 and Samsung's Exynos 8895 chipsets.

Huawei plans to employ its on-device AI to perform a multitude of tasks, such as, but not limited to, memory allocation, UI rendering, camera image processing, load balancing, and task scheduling.

Mark Li, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, said that Huawei's new chip may be better than the chips for the new iPhone range. Rather, his focus was on the processor that will power it, the Huawei-built Kirin 970.

Yu confirmed that the Mate 10 will be unveiled on october 16 in Munich, and while the executive did not provide any previews of the smartphone, he teased that the front of the device will be completely bezel-less.

"The NPU can think and actively work to provide you the best user experience, whereas other A.I. assistance like Google Assistant only works reactively", Yu said.

"Huawei is committed to developing smart devices into intelligent devices by building end-to-end capabilities that support coordinated development of chips, devices, and the cloud", he said. This has been confirmed by Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Ground at the event. In image recognition testing, the chipset was able to process 2,000 images per minute which Huawei claims is faster than other chips on the market.
