Theresa May to make mystery Brexit "intervention" this month

Negotiations appeared to stall after the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, accused the British government of seeking to retain the benefits of European Union membership while leaving the bloc.

In a punch interview on the Andrew Marr Show, he repeated legal arguments put forward by British negotiators last week which claim the United Kingdom isn't liable to pay the European Union any money after Brexit, adding: "We have got good lawyers".

'The only people who can reverse it would be the British people and I am not a dreamer, I am a realist. We do not want to "educate" or "teach lessons"'. Speaking to the BBC on September 3, he criticized the EU Commission for trying to paint the talks in a negative light after last week's third negotiating round ended with sharp criticism of the British approach. And supply chain and logistics operations are the first places that such damage will be felt.

"There was a clear assumption in the articles of the Good Friday Agreement that the United Kingdom and Ireland would remain in the EU".

However, as the latest round of talks ended without progress, this appears to be the first time any Whitehall official has openly addressed the issue around the negotiating table.

Earlier this week Michel Barnier, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, said the talks still had done nowhere near enough for there to be a prospect of moving on to trade discussions after October.

Britain has also stopped talking about bespoke trade deals and instead plans to copy those already in place between the European Union and third countries.

Those obligations "may not be legal ones, they may be moral ones or political ones", he said.

The event is not specifically "anti-Brexit", but is aimed at asking MPs to help make sure expats on both sides retain full rights so they can continue living their lives in their chosen countries as before.

Reports that the United Kingdom will pay the European Union up to £50bn as part of the agreement to leave the bloc have been dismissed by Brexit secretary David Davis as "nonsense".

"We are not there yet", she said, while suggesting the divorce bill was "inextricably linked" to the UK's future relationship with the EU.

The legislation will be debated on Thursday after MPs return to Westminster following a summer break in which some have been plotting their tactics for the Brexit battles ahead.

Downing Street said on Monday that it was "ready to intensify negotiations" and "typically [with] negotiations, as time goes on you see the pace pick up".

But Brexit Secretary David Davis told the BBC: "They have set this up to try to create pressure on us on money, that's what it's about, they are trying to play time against money".

"The clock is ticking and we are going to need transitional arrangements", Starmer said in an interview in the BBC's "Marr" show.
