Westmeath's Carr Advances At Junior US Open Tennis

This was much more like the Pliskova who defeated both Williams sisters to reach her first grand slam final at Flushing Meadows 12 months ago.

Sharapova hadn't played in a major tournament since the Australian Open in January 2016, when she tested positive for the newly banned drug meldonium. Even if she misses five metres out, she doesn't care, so it's different. "I'm very grateful that I can be part of it again", Kvitova said.

The twice Wimbledon champion stayed composed while Muguruza grew increasingly nervous, challenging line calls with no apparent reason as Kvitova moved her left and right with her crafty left hand.

And she's doing all this six years after being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease that dropped her ranking to as low as No.137 in 2012.

Kvitova's game is as natural as she is, as unaffected as this woman who reduced Li Na to tears with her eloquence at the Chinese player's retirement ceremony and has won the WTA sportsmanship award five times. "It's very unfortunate but at the same time I'm happy to be in the fourth round".

Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza is also out having been beaten by Petra Kvitova.

Kvitova will face an equally formidable opponent, Venus Williams, for a place in the last four - a stage of the competition she has never reached before - and whilst this contest will be just as challenging, recent form indicates she has a great chance of progressing. The two-time Wimbledon champion was the first to blink, though, failing to find her first serves as she threw in a couple of unforced errors, including a drive volley error on break point, to gift Muguruza the first break of serve.

It was the most significant match since Kvitova's comeback from the horrendous hand injuries she suffered when she was stabbed by an intruder at her home last December. Venus Williams was diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that causes fatigue and pain, in 2011, and it seemed that her best tennis days were behind her.

Kvitova will take on another player with a great Wimbledon pedigree on Tuesday when she faces Williams, who beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

"She is a champion and she is playing just unbelievable this year", said Kvitova of Williams.

The US Open odyssey of exciting 18-year-old Denis Shapovalov came to an end when Carreno Busta edged him out in three tie-break sets. Instead, she lives in the moment while focusing on what's next. I think maybe it's a bad sign sometimes, that I should be more appreciating than I am probably. There was tension as she tried to serve it out and she had to save three break points before clinching victory when Muguruza hit a forehand long. The Russian started out with motivation in her match against Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, winning the first set 7-5, but then ultimately wilted in the next two sets, going out on Arthur Ashe on Sunday.
