Hurricane Katia makes landfall as a Category 1 storm in Mexico

The storm is about 135 miles south-southeast of Tampico, Mexico, and about 110 miles northwest of Veracruz, Mexico.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Jose continued to move northwestward in the Atlantic and was blowing winds of 145 mph as a Category 4 storm about 160 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands early on Saturday morning.

Only 26 minutes separated the announcements of Irma and Katia making landfall.

Along those parts of the coast, Katia's storm surge - the quick rise in water caused by a hurricane's strong winds - could raise water levels as much as 8 feet above normal tides.

According to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Katia now has maximum sustained winds near 90 miles per hour, and some additional strengthening is forecast over the next day.

RAIN: Katia is expected to drop 10 to 15 inches of rain over northern Veracruz, eastern Hidalgo and Puebla.

The torrential rainfall from Katia - now a category 1 hurricane - may cause "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain", it said. The magnitude 8.1 natural disaster, which struck shortly before midnight local time in the Pacific Ocean, about 60 miles off the coast of the state of Chiapas, leveled hospitals, churches and the city's main government buildings.

Several Central American countries, including Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica, are also at risk. Shaking was also felt in Mexico City, Guatemala City, Puebla and San Salvador.

Texas Governor Rick Perry issued disaster declarations in 14 counties across the southern portion of the state, and hundreds of National Guard troops and other emergency crews were deployed in advance of the storm.

Delta customers flying through Mexico City through September 9 can rebook through September 12, with rebooked travel to begin no later than that date.
