Google has appealed a $2.4 billion fine from the EU

"Instead, Google abused its market dominance as a search engine by promoting its own comparison shopping service in its search results, and demoting those of competitors".

In June, the Silicon Valley giant was found to have given its own online shopping service an illegal advantage in internet search results across 13 countries within the European Economic Area - including the UK.

The regulator ordered the company to stop the practice by September. 28.

The company has submitted plans on how it plans to stop favouring its shopping service and these are now being reviewed by Brussels.

Google said it had no further comment.

It is anticipated to take years before the Luxembourg-based General Court rules on the case.

The EU competition enforcer will defend its decision in court, a spokesman said.

The fine over Google Shopping broke the previous European Union record for a monopoly case against United States chipmaker Intel of 1.06 billion euros in 2009 and made the EU the global leader in regulating Silicon Valley giants.

It's no surprise, particularly after Intel's successful appeal last week bounced the Commissions case back down to the lower court.

In an interview with AFP, Europe's anti-trust chief Margrethe Vestager last week said some of that proposal "pointed in the very right direction", but could only be judged once in effect.

So even if Google makes tweaks to the operation of Google Shopping in the short term, i.e.to avoid the risk of additional sanctions for non-compliance, years of uncertainty are being added to an antitrust investigation that has already clocked up more than six years of probes by European Union regulators.
