Irma storm: 3,3 million people left without power supply in Florida, USA

The 20- to 25-tower cranes now in use in Miami were created to withstand 145-mile-an-hour winds, city officials said last week.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the collapse caused any injuries.

A spokesman said in a statement that TD Bank is monitoring Irma's path and timing, and will make a decision on whether to close other TD Bank locations in Florida based on the storm's projections throughout the state.

"We got the opposite results from what I expected because those who stayed and who were under mandatory evacuation, they had more dependable social networks than those who evacuated", said Jennifer Collins, one of the University of South Florida researchers who conducted the study.

The Miami-Herald reports that ten years ago Miami-Dade County tried to put in place an ordinance which would require all cranes to be able to withstand 140 miles per hour winds.

Miami's emergency management director, Pete Gomez, said conditions remain unsafe and replacement crews will not be coming in until the weather improves. "They could have taken those cranes down, and Miami could have said 'take them down, ' but nobody wants to give that order".

The first collapse occurred Saturday morning at the under-construction building at 300 Biscayne Blvd.

The National Hurricane Centre said Irma's winds were at 177 km/h, just below major hurricane status, as the centre of the still risky and wide storm moved farther inland late today. Three, two, one. Reporter: This demonstration shows how impact glass can stop a projectile in its tracks.

Streets became rivers as Hurricane Irma brought storm surges.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and other officials have been warning citizens that Irma could be the storm of the century - a hurricane with every bit the destructive capacity as Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

The City of Miami tweeted that people in a building facing the crane should try to take shelter on "the opposite side" of the building or in a stairwell.

It warned that the cranes had to be unpinned, so that their horizontal booms could rotate on their support columns like a weather vane. "Consider that the counterbalances on tower cranes weigh about 20,000 to 30,000 pounds".

The major exception, Whiteman said, is if a tornado forms, which "virtually nothing" would be able to withstand.
