Five dead at Florida care home after hurricane cuts power

Three patients were found dead at the nursing home early Wednesday, and three more died at the hospital after a total of more than 100 were evacuated, many of them on stretchers or in wheelchairs, authorities said. A line of fallen mailboxes still had mail from before Irma inside.

Gov. Rick Scott said he had directed the state's health care administration and Department of Children in Families to open an investigation into the deaths.

Five people in Hollywood, Fla., nursing home died after the facility lost air conditioning to Hurricane Irma's destruction, according to Florida's Sun Sentinel.

In both cases nursing home administrators said they would rectify the problems.

Williams is among two fatalities in Georgia blamed on Irma, which crossed the state's southwest corner Monday but was large enough to cause damage throughout the state. The remaining two died at a nearby hospital. Her 58-year-old sister had been here 10 years. The records show that a year ago, the home had only a temporary generator, and was unable to produce documentation confirming its plans to replace it with a permanent one.

A kitchen worker told the Miami Herald that the center had power via a generator to cook, but no air conditioning. The staff used fans, put cold towels and ice on patients and gave them cold drinks, he said.

Meteorologists expect Wednesday's temperature in Hollywood, Florida to reach 88° Fahrenheit with 74 percent humidity, WCVB-ABC reported.

The National Park Service said Irma's rains and storm surge left 3 feet (1 meter) of water inside Fort Sumter in SC.

Like clockwork, stories of suffering by the oldest residents in the line of hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters seem to follow.

CNN affiliate WPLG reported that the home's air-conditioning had been out since Hurricane Irma struck Sunday.

In the battered Florida Keys, meanwhile, county officials pushed back against a preliminary estimate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that 25 percent of all homes in the Keys were destroyed and almost all the rest were heavily damaged.

After five nursing home residents died in Hollywood, Florida, a nearby street was swarmed with police, fire trucks and ambulances.

Utility firm Florida Power & Light said it had provided power to some parts of the Hollywood nursing home but that the facility was not on a county top tier list for emergency power restoration. As a precautionary measure, police are checking the other 42 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the city of Hollywood, Sanchez said. Some are in critical condition, she said. Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez declined to share with reporters further details about the generator but noted "it was extremely hot on the second floor of the facility".

Officials say damage was more severe in the areas around Big Pine Key and Cudjoe Key.

Officials said temperatures soared inside the Rehabilitation Centre at Hollywood Hills, 20 miles north of Miami, after enduring a "prolonged power failure" to the transformer that powered the air conditioning units.
