Israel Supports an Independent State of the Kurds

The Iraqi parliament voted by a majority to remove Karim after the local government in the province chose to join the Kurdish referendum, less than two weeks from now.

Israel "supports the legitimate efforts of the Kurdish people to achieve their own state", Netantahu said in a statement.

Baghdad, however, rejects the planned poll, saying it will adversely affect the ongoing fight against Daesh, which - despite a string of recent defeats - still maintains a significant presence in northern Iraq.

McGurk said he was encouraged that Kurdish leaders could embrace an alternative plan focusing on dialogue between the Kurdistan region and Baghdad and a delay in the referendum.

Turkey, Iran and Iraq's central government are all opposed to the vote.

The Kurds are spread across the region, with large populations in Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran.

Kareem is a vocal supporter of the referendum and campaigned for the vote also to be held in Kirkuk.

Israel supports the creation of a Kurdish state.

In an official statement on Thursday, the Kurdistan Region Presidency slammed the Iraqi Parliament's decision to sack the Kurdish Governor of Kirkuk. "That is the only body that can remove him".

The decision to remove the governor, Najmaddin Kareem, came after Kirkuk - an oil-rich province claimed by both the central government in Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq - chose to take part in the KRG referendum.

But hours later at a pro-referendum rally in Zakho, Barzani told those gathered that they would vote on September 25 as planned, according to local media. In a statement similar to Ankara's words, Baghdad said Iraqi Kurdish leaders must be prepared to "face the consequences" if they unilaterally declare independence.

The Kurdish area of northern Iraq has enjoyed broad autonomy since the first Gulf War in 1991. "If any authority around the world... concludes that (Iraq's Kurds) deserve or merit an independent entity of their own, we appreciate that position".
