US Imposes New Iran Sanctions Over Ballistic Missile Program, 'Cyberattacks'

Iran's vice president and head of its nuclear agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, told the German daily Der Spiegel last week that if Trump walks away from the deal, his country will uphold it with the other P5+1 countries.

His upcoming visit to the United Nations headquarters, reported Wednesday, comes as the future of Iran's landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers is in doubt.

Tillerson recalled the preamble of the agreement, which expected the deal "will positively contribute to regional and worldwide peace and security", and contrasted it with the regime's continued malign activity in the region.

The current nuclear deal is a failure; that is plain to see.

The nuclear non-proliferation experts said they "firmly support vigorous efforts to monitor and enforce compliance" with the agreement.

Iranian state TV says President Hassan Rouhani will attend this year's U.N General Assembly meeting in NY and address the assembly on September 20. "America's nouveau riche president or Congress adopt a new measure on Iran every day, which shows we shouldn't rely on the United States, and we don't need them after all", Velayati said. Those, however, aren't specifically covered in the nuclear agreement.

Velayati, a former foreign minister, added that no agreement endorsed by Iran had included permission for inspectors to visit Iranian military sites, adding that Iran would never have signed any agreement including that condition. Congress mandated such checkups every 90 days and the next deadline is in October.

Tillerson isn't the only administration official exploring ways to finesse certifying the Iran deal. The three-month recertification deadlines determine the status of sanction relief under the agreement.

One entity engaging in activities in support of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) ballistic missile program.

Weeks after U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley raised the issue during meetings with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials in Vienna, IAEA director-general Yukiya Amano said Monday that in carrying out its duties under what's known as the Additional Protocol, "we do not distinguish [between] civilian locations - sites - and military".

"Iran will definitely protect national interests in the (new) rearrangement", Nobakht told reporters.

If the White House decides not to waive the sanctions this week, that could throw the deal in doubt immediately.

Standing beside Tillerson, Britain's Johnson compared the tensions over North Korea's nuclear advance with the relative certitude that the Iran deal has provided.

Some have argued that sanctions would not simply roll back into place because the nuclear deal was not just between Iran and the USA; it was also signed by the UK, France, Germany, China, Russia, and the UN. If the deal fell apart, "Iran would be back on the march to getting the potential for getting a nuclear weapon, and the IAEA would lose all visibility into the program", Sherman said.
