Changes Needed In Iran Nuclear Deal To Win US Support, Tillerson Says

"And I think that's the president's assessment of the Iranian nuclear agreement, is that it's not a stiff enough agreement, it doesn't slow their program enough and holding them accountable is hard under the agreement". And I want to thank you on behalf of the people of Israel, and Israel's many friends around the world: "thank you Mr. President".

"The reason behind the foolish, very ugly, insolent and disorderly speech with cowboy and gangster wording... is their anger (and) desperation", Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in reference to Trump and the United States administration.

She said that with tensions growing between the USA and North Korea over the North's nuclear program, the need for the treaty is even greater.

This has not been a good week for President Trump's Iran policy. "What's different about the President's approach is he didn't just look at the Iran deal - he placed his decision on the Iran deal on broad context of how we protect American citizens, American interests, how we protect our allies and partners from Iran's broad range of destabilizing behavior". Instead, the USA should "enforce the hell out of the agreement and thereby force compliance on the part of Iran", Royce told CNN's Jake Tapper after Trump addressed the UN Tuesday.

Iranian President Hassan Rohani responded to Trump's criticism by telling reporters the United States would forfeit the world's trust if it exited the nuclear deal, which also was signed by France, Britain, Russia, China, and Germany. "That is why we talk about Iran defaulting on these expectations, because those expectations clearly have not been met", he said.

"Trump's ignorant hate speech belongs in medieval times - not the 21st Century UN - unworthy of a reply", Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's lead negotiator for the nuclear agreement, said on Twitter. "In this period when we see the risks with North Korea, we must maintain this line", French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told reporters.

"I wish to underscore here that the defense capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including our missiles, are exclusively defensive deterrents for the maintenance of regional peace and stability and the prevention of adventurist tendencies of irrational aspirants", he said.

He added, "any break-up in Iraq or Syria does not benefit regional stability and we are ready to work with Iran to strengthen the foundations of peace and security in the region". Those provisions relate to enriching uranium to levels near those needed to produce the fuel for a nuclear weapon, as well as other activities that limit Iran's atomic capabilities at various sites.

What's in the agreement and why does it matter? The Iranians, in turn, have threatened to respond to any US pullout by restarting nuclear activities that could take them closer to bomb-making capability.

"Trump is not the president of the world. he cannot even manage his own government", he said.

Trump has repeatedly hinted that he is inclined to scrap the deal, most recently in his own remarks before the General Assembly. Washington could not abide by an agreement "if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear programme", Trump said.

The Republican president described the Iran nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as "the worst and most one-sided transaction the U.S. has ever entered into", a characterization he often used during his presidential campaign.

The United States pays 22 percent of the UN's $5.4 billion core budget and 28.5 percent of the $7.3 billion peacekeeping budget.

A senior Iranian diplomat and a former nuclear negotiator said he believed the Europeans had no intention in following Trump's overtly aggressive Iran policy.

In an English-language post to Twitter, Zarif said, "Trump's ignorant hate speech belongs in medieval times, not the 21st-century United Nations - unworthy of a reply".

This is the third General Assembly since the deal was made, and Rouhani's appearances have reflected the arc of Iranian sentiment about it.

The deal was reached after two years of negotiations.

"We have opened our doors to engagement and cooperation", Rouhani said.
