Over five lakh Londoners sign petition to save Uber

Uber will lose its license to operate in London because it may be endangering public safety and security, the local regulator said Friday, in a severe blow to a company already facing big questions over its corporate culture. According to the Guardian, that process could take months.

It is no surprise then that students are amongst the ones that will be affected by TFL's decision to scrap Uber's London licence.

He added: "That requires a dialogue we sadly haven't been able to have". The company has spent millions of rupees to fix its broken image in a bid to overcome its past mishaps. "But as Uber's problems worsen, regulators feel emboldened to proceed and rightly sense that it's particularly urgent for them to do so".

The capital's transport authority said the Silicon Valley technology giant was not fit and proper to hold a private vehicle hire license and it would not be renewed when it expires on September 30. And its 40,000 drivers in London will be allowed on the roads until all the options for appeal have been exhausted.

TfL has concluded that Uber's conduct is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license. The taxi app's general manager in the city has told The Sunday Times they want to sit down with authorities to get it right.

TFL decided not to renew the taxi app's licence from the end of the month, risking the jobs of 40,000 drivers.

In London, Uber has faced criticism from unions, lawmakers and traditional black cab drivers over working conditions. However, Uber have argued that the decision is an insult to consumer freedom.

Uber has been branded a "disgrace" by shadow chancellor John McDonnell after the firm lost its licence to operate in London.

During a stand-off in New York City in 2015, Uber named a mock feature on its app after the city's mayor, Bill de Blasio, and used it to warn that a regulatory proposal he backed could increase waits for rides.

Among Uber's possible concessions were giving its drivers employment benefits and imposing limits on drivers' hours to address road-safety concerns, as it does in NY. The company is reeling from the ouster of former chief executive officer Travis Kalanick and grappling with allegations of sexual harassment, labor-rights abuses, skirting regulation, bribery of government officials and a lawsuit accusing it of stealing self-driving vehicle technology.

Innovation director at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said: "It's not in the interests of our economy, people in London and in this case, drivers, to restrict new products and services". Uber urged customers to sign the petition in a tweet posted at 12:41 p.m. Friday, about two hours after the London agency's decision. The city's black-cab drivers - who spend years learning the city streets to pass the famed "Knowledge" test - objected to the interlopers who undercut their business. He said he disagreed with the decision but it was based on past behaviour. Khan stressed that while he would like for London to cement its position as the global capital of digital technology, all companies must keep within the rules and maintain the high standards that are expected.

Uber should have called itself Unter.

And from the beginning, Uber's new leader made it clear that major adjustments were coming. As evidence they cited a statistic showing that there were 32 allegations of sexual assault or other crimes reported by passengers in Uber cars in 2015 (when they came to town).
