A look at Aaron Judge's historic rookie season by the numbers

In today's baseball game, the New York Yankees took control in the first inning with a 1-0 lead, continued to add to it, and never trailed.

Aaron Judge has tied Mark McGwire's major league record for home runs by a rookie, hitting his 49th of the season.

The Yankees' Aaron Judge celebrates his solo home run against the Detroit Tigers on July 31, 2017, at Yankee Stadium. "As we got to spring training, what I said is if he gets the barrel to the ball he's going to do a lot of damage, and if he does it on a consistent basis he's going to have a huge year for us". "He's pitching like he's trying to get you out".

Said Judge: "First curtain call, I hope it was a good one".

McGwire recorded 49 homers for the Oakland Athletics in 1987.

The trajectory of Judge's season, with its peaks and valleys, is common knowledge at this point.

Each blast also proved historic for the 6-7 right fielder. Sanchez followed Judge in the seventh with back-to-back homers for the third time this year, raising his total to 33.

Judge came into Monday's game with 48 home runs on the year, one shy of tying McGwire's record. He has six home runs and 10 RBIs in his last five games alone. He hit 30 homers prior to the All-Star break, putting him on pace for 57, and produced an AL-best 5.3 Wins Above Replacement, catapulting him into the conversation for MVP.

Judge was hitting.329 with 30 homers and 66 RBIs when he won the All-Star Home Run Derby, then slumped to a.179 average with seven homers and 16 RBIs from the start of the second half through August 31, striking out 67 times in 44 games.

As the playoff-bound Yankees inflicted damage, the Royals managed just three runs against veteran starter CC Sabathia, who offered six innings.

The Royals (76-79) are six games behind the Minnesota Twins in the race for the second American League wild-card spot.
