After Uber apology, London mayor welcomes talks

Transport for London said the decision was based on the way drivers' background checks were completed, how criminal offences were reported and the use of software created to stop regulators accessing its app.

Uber's closest United States rival in the taxi-hailing business, Lyft has repeatedly met with officials from London's transport regulator over the past year, a sign it may be targeting the city for worldwide expansion.

"Obviously I am pleased that he has acknowledged the issues that Uber faces in London", Khan said in a statement.

Uber said: "We intend to challenge this in the courts to defend the livelihoods of drivers & the consumer choice of millions of Londoners who use Uber.Uber drivers in London pass the same DBS background checks as other private hire services - see their name, photo & TfL license number in-app".

The company has 21 days to appeal, and can continue to operate during the appeal process.

"Uber operates in more than 600 cities around the world, including more than 40 towns and cities here in the United Kingdom", the company said.

"We will appeal this decision on behalf of millions of Londoners, but we do so with the knowledge that we must also change", Khosrowshahi said.

TfL made the decision amidst concerns about the safety of cabs working for Uber, as well as questions over the "gig economy" working practices of the company and how it treats its drivers.

Transport for London (TfL) announced last Friday that Uber would not be issued with a private hire operator's licence once its current licence is up on 30 September.

London mayor Sadiq Khan reacted positively to the apology.

He also joined other critics in arguing that it is TfL's job to carry out criminal record checks on drivers - not operators like Uber. It has certainly confirmed that Uber would appeal, but also recognized that his company needed to change.

The apology came in an open letter issued three days after the firm was told by Transport for London (TfL) its licence would not be renewed because it was "not fit and proper" to hold one, Sky reports. Past year a United Kingdom employment tribunal ruled Uber drivers were "employees", and called the firm's self-employment mantra "twisted language".

Since the decision on 22 September 2017, more than 760,000 people have signed an online petition to reverse TfL's decision.

'This is a role that the licensing authority is responsible for, not the company with which or for whom the driver works, ' he said.

"I want London to be at the forefront of innovation and new technology and to be a natural home for exciting new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service", he said. Khan reiterated that companies which played by the rules were welcome in London.
