Ghana thrash Nigeria 4-1 to win 2017 WAFU tournament

Meanwhile, Stephen Sarfo was named the Man of the match.

Ghana's team of local footballers on Sunday thrashed their counterparts from Nigeria by 4 goals to 1 in the final of the 2017 West African Football Union Cup of Nations championship at the Cape Coast stadium.

But the humiliation was not over for Nigeria as Winful Cobbinah scored a fourth goal for rampant Ghana three minutes into stoppage time.

Ghana's Vincent Atingah increased the tally through a spot kick in the 60th minute.

"Ghana lost 0-2 to Nigeria in the Group stage and will have to strategize well to overcome the Nigerians on Sunday".

Ghana goal scorer, Sarfo continued from where he stopped in the first half as he kept on causing headache for the Nigeria defence.

Nigerians however pulled one back in the dying moments of the game. "We lost to a better side and we didn't create chances but it has been a worthwhile event for us as we hope to improve ahead of CHAN 2018".

For players plying their trade on the domestic scene, it is enough motivation for them to go all out as Ghana and Nigeria rekindle their long rivalry in football.

"We are motivated enough to win this cup, after failing to qualify for the CHAN tournament, we would like to use this trophy to appease Ghanaians".

"That brought a bit of pressure onto the team but when we re-grouped, we made sure that we spoke among ourselves and made it a point that we are coming to this tournament to at least appease for the loss".

The hosts were already heading to the title with a 4-0 scoreline before Nigeria's Ali Rabiu grabbed a consolation for the Eagles just before the final whistle went off.
