US AG singles out Boise State in talk about freedom of speech

Sessions plans to declare that free speech is "under attack", following the recent clashes of protesters at Berkley and other campuses in response to conservative speakers. Sessions said on Wednesday.

"This kind of government chilling of speech is precisely what the First Amendment to the United States Constitution is meant to prevent", the letter reads.

They also took issue with the Justice Department's prosecution of Desiree Fairooz, a member of the anti-war group Code Pink, who was arrested and later tried for laughing during Sessions' confirmation hearing. Universities are harming that development by becoming "echo chamber [s] of political correctness and homogenous thought, a shelter for fragile egos".

He castigated universities who give in to protestor demands on a controversial speaker as giving in to a "heckler's veto". "However, we, the undersigned, condemn the hypocrisy, about Attorney General Jeff Sessions speaking about free speech", according to a statement from the group.

"It baffles me that our protest is still being misconstrued as disrespectful to the country, flag and military personnel", he wrote, referring to the decision he and former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made previous year to kneel during the anthem. They placed tape across their mouths and sat down.

It seemed like they were rescinding those invites because they didn't want any sort of hostile environment, and I can understand not wanting to have a violent environment, but that's not at all what we were trying to do.

"He should be accountable to everyone in this country, let alone on this campus", she said. No one needed counseling, ' Sessions snarked.

Those who couldn't secure an invitation still have ways of exercising their First Amendment right to voice displeasure with Sessions' presence, even if he can't see it. "But the right of free speech does not exist only to protect the ideas upon which most agree at a given moment in time", he continued.

The Justice Department moved in the Georgia case as universities across the country are struggling to find a balance between free speech and, in cases of state universities, the First Amendment and protecting students who say they are offended or feel threatened by the views of others on campus.

"It is part of the mission of a great academic institution that we are able to express our views and engage in a civil debate", Weinberg wrote. "It's the irony of him coming here".

Consider Trump's contempt for the African-American athletes who protest police brutality by taking a knee during the national anthem.

"There are those who will say that certain speech isn't deserving of protection".

"He was happy. He feels like he's clearly winning that exchange", the person said.

Yiannopoulos held his own forum on Sunday after organizers nixed an event.

The Georgetown law campus has hosted a number of big names in the past week.

The attorney general was not involved deciding which students were invited or excluded from the event, Tanya Weinberg, director of media relations at Georgetown Law, said in a statement.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions warned that freedom of thought and speech are "under attack" on college campuses, and he called on university officials to "boldly and unequivocally" defend free expression rather than stifle it.
