Fans seriously hurt as barrier collapses at French top-flight football game

The travelling fans were celebrating Fode Ballo-Toure's goal in the 16th minute but the fence collapsed under the weight of the supporters.

Emergency services attended to injured fans while a decision on whether to continue the match was being made.

"Three people were evacuated and are seriously injured while 17 others have minor injuries", a Ligue 1 official said (via Goal.com) after the incident that caused the match to be abandoned.

De Mester confirmed the stadium was being refurbished, but insisted the painting and roofing work had nothing to do with the collapse.

"But LOSC have the right to question the conditions and security proposed for our supporters by the club and stadium in Amiens".

Ingla had earlier expressed his sympathy to Lille supporters on the official club website. "And so that this never happens again".

"'Football should be a celebration and the police had warned us that 200 very worked-up ultras were in the stand reserved for Lille fans", Joanni said. "We hope that's not too bad" following the incident.

"Professional football demands a certain number of organisational requirements, and in this context, these statements seem inappropriate and irresponsible".

The game has now been halted as injured fans are treated.

She said: "Our emotion and solidarity is with the Lille fans".
