Let's Make a Deal host Hall dies at 96

"Let's Make a Deal", which Hall co-created, debuted as a daytime show on NBC in 1963 and became a TV staple.

They could win a prize such as a Cadillac, but they might win a "zonk", a joke gift such as a farm animal.

The game show grew to such popularity it gave rise to a well-known probability riddle that mathematicians dubbed "The Monty Hall Problem".

Born in 1921 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to an Orthodox Jewish family that owned a slaughterhouse, Halparin graduated with a BS in chemistry and zoology from the University of Manitoba.

"Let's Make a Deal" became a part of American pop culture, with Hall one of the most recognizable stars on TV.

Our thoughts are with Hall's family during this hard time.

However, Sharon Hall said Hall never refused an autograph and used his fame to help others.

It was a show dedicated to the idea that everyday folk - people like you and me! - would gleefully make themselves look foolish for a chance at a big cash prize. Hall was producer or executive producer of the show through most of its runs. He first tested his skills on radio and, after moving to NY in 1955 and later to Los Angeles, began working on a variety of television shows. The conundrum was featured in the 2008 film "21" with Kevin Spacey. But the enduring, mystifying appeal of Hall was how much, how deeply, the contestants loved him, even though they shouldn't have: He was a resident trickster god, a double-agent, always working against them to ensure the show would land, would have stakes, would get people talking.

Hall and his wife, Marilyn Plottel, married in 1947.

He is survived by two daughters, a son, a brother and 5 grandchildren.
