Watch Live as Astronauts Fix a Robotic Arm on the ISS

Two NASA astronauts will begin their first spacewalk, of the scheduled three, to fix the International Space Station (ISS) on October 5.

Two astronauts will spacewalk outside the International Space Station in order to fix the main robotic appendage of the orbiting lab on Wednesday.

Bresnik and Vande Hei will venture back outside October 10 while Joe Acaba will join the station commander for the October 18 excursion.

Five days from now, on October 10th, Bresnik and Vande Hei will do another spacewalk to lubricate the new LEE and then replace a camera on the outside of the station.

Their main work involved the latching end of the Canadian-made arm, known as Canadarm2.

Live coverage of the spacewalk will begin at 6:30 a.m. EDT (1030 GMT), when the two spacewalkers will put on their spacesuits. For the third spacewalk, Acaba will join Bresnik instead.

The arm is integral to space station operations and can extend 60 feet off ISS, grabbing visiting cargo vehicles and payloads.

A few moments later, Vande Hei, making his first spacewalk, made his way outside. The Canadarm2 was instrumental during the early days of the ISS when large pieces of equipment had to be moved and installed.

This will be Randy Bresnik's third spacewalk and will mark Van Hei's debut.

In the near term, two more spacewalks are planned October 10 and 18 to lubricate the newly attached LEE-A fitting, to replace two cameras with degraded color and to carry out other routine maintenance.

For identification, Bresnik, call sign EV-1, is using helmet camera 18 and wearing a suit with red stripes.

They replaced one of two Latching End Effectors (LEE) which had lost the ability to grip effectively, said the USA space agency. A spare LEE is located along the side of the station's truss.
