McDonald's Szechuan Sauce set to return after 19 years

Select restaurants will have limited quantities of Szechuan Sauce dipping packets while supplies last.

Currently, an "authentic" bottle of McDonald's Szechuan sauce is up for grabs in an eBay bidding war for $3,500 with 48 bids at the time of this story. And you can wait - hopefully for not more than a few years - for the next season of Rick and Morty. It will be available at only four McDonald's restaurants in South Florida on October 7, starting at 2 p.m.

Despite this dramatic claim, the sauce gag seems to have been a one-time joke; it was not mentioned again in the following nine episodes of the season.

Customers will be informed once the number of tickets for the sauce run out, she said, and extra staff will be on hand. This is, therefore, assumed to be a direct collaboration with the Rick (and Morty) show.

Spoiler alert: You're going to want to get in line.

In July, McDonald's sent a jug of Szechuan sauce to the show's co-creator Justin Roiland after finding it in "a dimension where it's always 1998".

"That's right, collectible art, worthy of the pop-culture status fans have given their favorite sauces", McDonald's says.

Now, McDonald's has announced that it will be reviving the sauce to promote its new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders.

In a promotion to help introduce the fast-food chain's new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders menu item, McDonald's said the Szechuan sauce will be available at its restaurant at 2853 Centre Drive across from Wright State University in Fairborn, starting at 2 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 7.

The shows co-creator, Dan Harmon, recently told Polygon that the sauce mentions in the episode were meant to poke fun at the show's other creator, Justin Roiland. But I personally thought it was a sauce that was trying too hard in a world where with McNuggets sauce you just want something to taste like honey or like a BBQ sauce.
